Producing Nanoclay using mineral processing and physical chemical purification techniques Maryam Veiskarami M veiskarami@mi iut ac ir Date of Submission 2015 01 18 Department of mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Supervisors M Nasiri Sarvi mnsarvi@cc iut ac ir A Mokhtari ar mokhtari@cc iut ac irAbstractToday nanoclays are important due to the wide applications in the industry and theirunique features such as platelet structure low cost availability possibility of surfacespacing and surface chemistry changes high ion exchange capacity Nanoclay is purfiedclay from other minerals which specified particle size distribution usually less than 2microns and at least one of its dimensions would be in the nanometer range Hence in thisstudy a novel two step method was tested for producing purified nanoclay from threedifferent Bentonite region The purification processes effect on the final characteristics ofclay and its impact on modified cation with organic molecules was investigated This newmethod involves combining of physical and chemical methods for the purification ofnanoclay In these samples there were two main impurities cristobalite and calcite thatwere dissolved using a chemical dissolution method by using NaOH and HCl in order toget the highest purified montmorillonite with least changes in its In the second step otherimpurities were separated using a physical sedimentation by using centrifugal force Theresults showed that separation of all of the impurities is not possible only by physicalmethods is and requires using the chemical dissolution of impurities for removing them all Further analysis showed that concentration and chemical reaction time is important todissolve the impurities and excessive increase of these parameters affect montmorillonitestructure After these steps to change the distance between the clay plates the hexa decyltrimethyl ammonium Bromide HDTMA Br was used The results showed that themodification step is directly affected by the purification step This means that in case ofthe physical purification alone which is incapable of separating all impurities aftermodification behavior of nonoclay is like raw bentonite After purification by bothphysical and chemical methods arrangement of HDTMA Br in montmorillonite plates isregular and modified nanoclay has a regular pattern in the distance between the plate andthe structure Previous results showed that purification is faced with some challenges onlyby using physical methods To overcome these challenges using chemical dissolutiontechniques in addition to physical separation is recommended Keywords Nanoclay clay nanocomposite
