Synthesis of Bio nano Zinc Particles Using Plant Waste for Nutrition of Tomato Reza Abolghasemi Abolghasemireza@ymail com December 8 2014 Department of Horticulture Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Maryam Haghighi mhaghighi@cc iut ac ir Mousa Solgi m solgi@araku ac ir AbstractNanotechnology in a simple definition means nano sized technology Nanotechnology applications andpotentials make new hopes for environment protection In recent years mass production and buildup ofplant residues especially medicinal plant residues is a serious environmental issue therefore reuse andrecycling of these wastes to the value added products become a major scientific and technical challenge This study was aimed to investigate the application of two medicinal plant residues in production of somenano zinc compounds as sources of zinc in a nutrient solution culture In a preliminary work the residuesextract of different medicinal plants as chicory marshmallow thyme and moshgak were examined inproduction of nono zinc compounds as a green and environmental friendly method Among the testedresidues thyme Timus vulgaris and moshgak Ducrosia anethifolia residues showed the best results innano zinc oxide and nano zinc sulfide production respectively Therefore in this experiment the extractsof these two plants were used for production of nano zinc oxide and nano zinc sulfide The producednono zinc compounds were then characterized using scanning electron microscopy SEM UV VIS andFTIR spectroscopy and X ray diffraction XRD techniques The applied techniques confirmed thesuccessful production of nano zinc oxide and nano zinc sulfide using the extracts of thyme and moshgakresidues respectively In a nutrient solution culture the nano zinc compounds were then examined assources of zinc in comparison with laboratory grade zinc sulfate and zinc acetate For this purpose fourzinc sources as zinc sulfate zinc acetate nano zinc oxide and nano zinc sulfide three zinc levels as 0 2 1and 2 mM in modified Jhonson nutrient solution were examined to grow tomato hydroponicaly in aresearch greenhous at Isfahan University of Technoloy The test was carried out with three replications ina factorial experiment with a complete randomized design The results indicated that the shoot diameter greenness index photosynthesis leaf numbers flower numbers plant height shoot fresh and dry weight root fresh and dry weight root volume and shoot Zn content were significantly affected by the zincsources Also plant height shoot fresh weight root dry weight and shoot Zn concentration weresignificantly affected by the solution Zn levels The interaction between different Zn levels and sourceson shoot dry weight was significant The mean comparisons indicated that the highest values of allmeasured factors except stem diameter were related to the nano zinc sulfide source The maximum stemdiameter was observed in nano zinc oxide and the minimum was related to zinc sulfate treatment Thelowest photosynthesis rate leaf numbers plant height and root volume were also in zinc sulfatetreatment The highest and lowest shoot and root dry weight were related to nano zinc sulfide and zincsulfate respectively With increasing Zn concentration of nutrient solution the shoot and root fresh anddry weight were increased The maximum and minimum greenness indexes were observed in 2 and 0 2mM zinc concentrations respectively Shoot zinc content was increased significantly with the Zn levelsof nutrient solution Overally the nano zinc compounds showed better results in tomato growthparameters as compared with the zinc sulfate source althogh the superiority for nano zinc oxide was notsignificant In conclusion the manufactured nano zinc sulfide with the green method increased allmeasured plant factors and it could be a suitable zinc source in nutrient solution for tomato needsKeywords Nanoparticles Green chemistry Herbal extract Waste Thyme Moshgak
