Potential Impacts of landuse on Ecological Integrity and Zonning of Protected Areas A Case Study In Ghamishlou Wildlife Sanctuary Mohamad Zohoori Hemat m zohoori@na iut ac ir Date of Submission 2015 01 06 Department of Natural Resources Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Alireza Sofianian soffianian@cc iut ac ir Sima Fakhrran fakheran@cc iut ac ir Abstract Protected areas are essential to protect and maintain biodiversity and representative natural landscapes across the world Zoning is now considered to be one of the most important tools for administration and management of protected areas However the lack of zoning is common for most protected areas in developing countries One of the problems that the zoning of protected areas may face is the effects of surrounding areas Therefore this is important to consider human activities in surrounding area especially for protected areas near population centers Unlike the classic zoning which considered the protected areas and the unprotected areas independently the new zoning model takes into account that each area is interconnected with the surrounding land uses This study exemplifies the advantages of considering surrounding land uses for protected area zoning and presents this approach for zoning of Ghamishloo wildlife sanctuary in Isfahan This study compared the two zoning approaches with and without considering the buffer surrounding the wildlife refuge We used multi criteria evaluation and multi objective land allocation for zoning the sanctuary First we prepared a land use map of the area using classification of the Landsat 8 OLI imagery data We used the analytical hierarchy process AHP and Fuzzy method to derive weights of the criteria Finally multi objective land allocation MOLA function was used for allocation of the sanctuary s land area to the zones for both of the approaches The wildlife sanctuary was divided into 6 zones including core area conservation extensive recreation intensive recreation rehabilitation and cultural zones consisting of 25 60 8 0 5 5 and 0 5 of the area respectively The results revealed that considering land uses around the Ghamishloo Wildlife Refuge influences on allocation of the zones We conclude that considering the human activities land uses development which already have existing or activities happening around to the designated areas is very important for park planners to zone in a prospective manner Key words Wildlife Refuge Zoning Landuse Ghamishloo AHP MCE
