90 Relationships between Magnetic Susceptibility and Sequentialy Extracted Heavy Metals in Some Soils Develovoped on Igneous Rocks in Kordestan Province West of Iran Mohammad Javad Farrokhi farokhi mj@gmail com September17 2014 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Sh Ayoubi ayoubi@cc iut ac ir AbstractDue to accumulation of heavy metals in soil and their risk to human health their recognition originand distribution have attracted considerable interests in recent years Pollution of soil significantyreduces the environmental quality and affects the human health Chemical approaches for evaluatingsoil pollution are difficult expensive and destructive otherwise recently methods dealing withmagnetometery which are quick inexpensive and non destructive have been proposed as a proxy forassessing the heavy metal pollution of soil 76 samples in this study with the removal of heavy metalsfrom soil magnetic susceptibility changes were evaluated After preparation the four phases ofexchangeable heavy metals oxides reducing the structural phase and the remaining soil was extractedby sequential extraction and After the departure of each phase the magnetic susceptibility at twofrequencies KHZ 0 46 short wavelength and KHZ 4 6 long wavelength were measured Concentrations of lead zinc manganese iron copper nickel chromium and cobalt were measured byatomic absorption The results showed that the removal of heavy metals from soil and soil magneticsusceptibility significant effect on reducing it Maximum reduction of magnetic susceptibility andstructural phase residual after removal of heavy metals from the soil and the lowest soil exchangeablephase occurred after withdrawal of these elements In this study the correlation between soil heavymetals in different phases as well as the correlation between magnetic susceptibility and heavy metalswere determined by soil properties The results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals indifferent phases of the soil has an influence on the magnetic susceptibilityand a magneticsusceptibility method as an easy low cost and fast to check the heavy metal concentration in soil usedin different phases Key Words Heavy metals Sequential extraction magnetic susceptibility Contamination factor Solidarity
