Abstract :
XML is a markup language developed by the WWW
Consortium. It has become a standard for data representation
and exchanging over the Internet. This paper introduces the
application of XML on a remote machine monitoring and fault
diagnostic system through Internet and mobile communication,
such as mobile phones and PDAs. The remote monitoring
system takes XML as a core and uses it to encode diagnostic
data. The capabilities provided by XML on Internet and
mobile communication include the display of different contents
in a XML file based on different requirements; the enquiry of
current running conditions of an inspected machine via an
Internet connected PC, or a mobile phone, or a PDA; the
import of diagnostic data to a remote client program by using
the XML based structure. Using XML makes all these
capabilities become possible. Indeed, XML makes the sharing
of data between different applications and the broadcasting of
diagnostic data easier. It also uplifts the expandability and
sustainability of the remote monitoring system.
